Reclaim Cocktail Hours – Get a Cocktail Table

 One of these is cocktail hour. In the 50s and 60s cocktail hour was a staple thing to do. Dad would come home from work and want to kick his feet up with a nice drink. Often a couple neighbors would come over and everyone would have a cocktail or two around the cocktail table while talking about the happenings of the day in the office and for mom back at home. It’s sad that we have gotten rid of this social event that kept people connected. Perhaps it’s time to bring it back.

If you want to take a step to bring back cocktail hour in your home, the first thing you need to do is get a cocktail table. This is a table that is a little taller than your traditional table. The reason for this is that most people who are enjoying a cocktail and a social time are going to be standing or milling about the room as they do this. A traditional table, with it’s shorter height, means they have to bend down every time they want to be able to put their drink down and pick it up again. Instead cocktail tables are a little taller to give you an easier time when putting down and retrieving your drink.

When purchasing a cocktail table you really only have a few questions to ask:

What height? – There are a couple options in height for cocktail tables so you are going to have to decide if this is only a place for people to stand with drinks or you want them to be able to sit down. If they are going to sit down as well you may want to look at shorter cocktail tables or make sure you understand that you will have to purchase special chairs to be able to sit near the table top.

What size? – For the most part cocktail tables are not too large. They are pretty much meant as a place to set your drink, so this means a smaller tabletop surface. If you are going to serve snacks as well as drinks you may want to look for a cocktail table that has a little wider top to be able to accommodate plates and drinks comfortably.

What Style? – The final thing you need to think about is the style of cocktail table you want in your home. If you really want to flash back to the 50s and 60s you may want to look for a retro table that will take you back in time. Otherwise you may want something to suit the rest of the décor in your home. Frankly, the sky is the limit

Returning to the days of old, at least when it comes to traditions like cocktail hour, is not too hard. Once you have a cocktail table in place, call a couple neighbors, invite them over and remind them of the importance of this lost tradition.
